Getting Started & Booking

How do I schedule a lesson or book an experience?

All our sessions are by appointment only, so we don't accept walk-ins.

To get started, check out our services page where you can learn about everything we offer and find what's right for you.

If you're interested in weekly riding lessons or private evaluations, just contact us and we'll help you find the right trainer and program level.

What services does Windmill Stables offer?

We offer riding lessons, camps, parties, photo shoots, boarding, and more. The best way to explore everything we offer is to visit our services page, where you can learn about all our options and find what works for you.

Can I stop by to visit the horses?

Absolutely! We love having visitors during our open barn hours from 9:00 to 11:30 AM.

We do have some safety guidelines in place to protect both you and our horses, so please take a look at our barn rules before your visit.

Remember that even the gentlest horses can be unpredictable sometimes, so we ask that you approach them with calmness and respect. We enjoy sharing our horses with the community, but safety comes first.

Requirements & Restrictions

What are the age restrictions for riding?

Our age limits are based on what each type of ride requires.

Arena riding lessons are for ages 7 and up. Pony rides are perfect for little ones ages 3 to 6.

Try-It-Out experiences require participants to be at least 7 years old. Ride & Groom sessions are for adults 18 and older only.

Do you have a weight limit for riding?

Yes, we have a 230 pound weight limit for all riders. This keeps our horses healthy and helps riders stay balanced in the saddle.

If there's any concern about a rider's weight and horse safety, we may ask you to step on a scale to confirm you meet our guidelines.

Our horses' long-term soundness comes first.

Do I need to be physically capable to ride?

Participants should be physically able to mount, dismount, and ride comfortably.

If you have any medical conditions such as back or neck injuries, pregnancy, or heart issues, please talk with your healthcare provider before scheduling a lesson.

Do I need to bring ID?

Please be prepared to show valid identification if we request it during your visit.

What to Expect & Safety

What should I wear for horseback riding?

Here's what to wear for your ride. You'll need closed-toe shoes like boots or sturdy sneakers.

Long pants are required (no shorts allowed), and it's best to avoid loose or flowing clothing that might get caught.

We provide helmets for everyone and they're mandatory, though you're welcome to bring your own ASTM-certified helmet if you prefer.

How long does it take to learn how to walk a horse?

Most riders begin at the walk in their very first lesson. This is the foundation for everything else and gives students a chance to focus on balance, posture, steering, stopping, and communicating with the horse using their legs and reins. Both English and Western riders start here.

How long does it take to learn how to trot (or jog)?

The trot (called a jog in Western riding) is a two-beat gait that's bouncier and faster than the walk. Riders usually begin trotting within their first few lessons, but it can take several weeks to feel comfortable and balanced, especially while learning to post the trot in English riding. Core strength, coordination, and rhythm all come into play.

How long does it take to learn how to canter (or lope)?

The canter (or lope in Western) is a smoother, faster three-beat gait that requires confidence, control, and a secure seat. Most students are introduced to the canter after they can comfortably post the trot, steer independently, and demonstrate good balance. This typically takes a few months of consistent riding lessons.

I want to learn how to jump, how long will that take?

Jumping is an exciting part of English riding, but it builds on everything that comes before. Riders must first be confident and steady at the trot and canter, with strong balance and control. Most riders start learning basic jumping skills after 6 to 12 months of regular lessons, though this varies by age, athleticism, and practice frequency.

Can I gallop?

We love the enthusiasm, but galloping is an advanced skill, not part of beginner riding. It takes strength, coordination, and lots of saddle time to ride a horse at speed safely and stay balanced. New riders start with the basics and work up to faster gaits as their skills develop.

What if I can't follow directions during my lesson?

Safety comes first, so all riders must be able to understand and follow their instructor's directions throughout the lesson. This includes proper mounting, steering, and dismounting techniques.

If a rider is unable to follow directions, behaves unsafely, or is disruptive, the instructor has the authority to end that person's lesson immediately to keep everyone safe.

What happens if someone behaves inappropriately?

We maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone. Reckless or disruptive behavior won't be tolerated and may result in immediate removal from the lesson.

Policies & Logistics

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

For camps, try-it-out rides, events, and parties, if you cancel 14 or more days ahead, you'll get full credit toward future services, valid for 90 days. Cancellations within 14 days might mean you lose your fees.

For lessons and photography sessions, you need to cancel at least 48 hours in advance and reschedule within 30 days. Cancellations within 48 hours might result in lost fees. If you don't show up without letting us know, you'll forfeit your fee with no refund or credit.

Failure to attend without prior notice (no-show) will result in the forfeiture of your fee, and no refund or credit will be issued.

What is your inclement weather rescheduling policy?

We keep a close eye on weather conditions to make sure everyone, horses included, stays safe and comfortable.

If bad weather rolls in, we might need to reschedule your visit. When this happens, we'll contact you as quickly as possible to work out new dates and arrangements.

Thanks for your patience when weather forces changes.

Getting Involved

Can I volunteer at Windmill Stables?

Yes, we absolutely love our volunteers! To get involved, you'll need to sign up for our Windmill Family Membership first. Our volunteers help with horse care, keeping the barn in great shape, and supporting lessons. Head over to our volunteer page to learn everything you need to know about getting started.

Do you lease or sell horses?

Yes, we do both! We offer horse leases to qualified students who are actively taking lessons with us. Leasing lets you build a special bond with a particular horse without all the responsibilities of ownership. It's great for riders who want to advance faster, get ready for shows, or just experience what it's like to care for "their own" horse.

We also sometimes have lesson horses available for sale, or we can help you find your next equine partner. Whether you want a family horse, a show prospect, or something in between, we can help match you with a horse that fits your goals and experience level.

Each lease and sale situation is unique, so please contact us directly to learn more, set up a trial ride, or start the matchmaking process.
